A cataract is an eye disease in which the lens of the eye, which is supposed to be clear, becomes cloudy and opaque. As the lens becomes cloudier and the condition worsens, vision decreases. A cataract can develop in one eye in both eyes (cataracts). Cataracts can develop from an eye injury, from using certain medications, as a result of another eye disease or from other health problems like diabetes. Cataracts can develop in adults and children. Although cataracts are usually associated with aging, some children can be born with congenital cataracts. Therefore, if your child has vision problems, it may be necessary to test your child for them. If you or your children are having vision problems, we recommend that you be examined by our Paradise optometrist, Joseph Eng, OD. Dr. Eng, OD can do a cataract eye exam during your comprehensive eye exam. He will check for cataracts as well as other possible eye diseases and conditions.

There are a series of different tests to diagnose eye cataracts in both adults and children. Our Paradise optometrist, Joseph Eng, OD will do a thorough exam when you see him. It is recommended that when you get a comprehensive eye exam so you can be checked not only for cataracts but for other possible eye conditions and diseases as well. Many of the tests used to check for cataracts are usually included in a comprehensive eye exam. The tests used to help diagnose cataracts are: visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, a split lamp test, and pupil dilation. A visual acuity test measures how accurate your vision is at different distances. This is a painless and simple test. An eye chart is used. You will be asked to read letters of different sizes off a chart. This is a quick way to test for cataracts but this test is not a standalone test. Further testing must be done to diagnose cataracts. A contrast sensitivity test is similar to the acuity test but is more involved since it looks at how cataracts can decrease image contrast due to light scattering and glare caused by cataracts. A split lamp test involves the use of a split lamp which is a special type of microscope. It magnifies the patient’s eyes so Dr. Eng can examine your eye lenses to determine if cataracts are present and the severity of the cataracts. Pupil dilation is a very common test to check for cataracts. Dr. Eng will be able to get view of the entire eye lens when your pupil is dilated. The doctor can then examine the entire lens to see if a cataract is present.

The natural tears your eye creates do a more than just simply lubricate your eye for comfort’s sake, this layer of fluid works to create a liquid shield that can protect your eye from the many dangerous elements you experience in the world around you. As odd as it is to think about, just as your skin is in fact an organ of the body, your eyes too are essentially an exposed organ. Your eyes are extremely susceptible to damage, which is why our Paradise optometrist always recommends you wear sunglasses to protect them from UV rays, as well as protective eye wear to keep them from injury at work or at play. When eyes are properly lubricated, this allows for essential anti-bodies to be spread evenly across the surface of the eye, protecting them from the possibility of infection. Dry eyes can be often susceptible to a wide array of optical disease, such as pink eye, due to the lack of anti-bodies present on your eyes. If you find yourself experiencing pain, blurred vision, increased light sensitivity, itching and gritty sensations, or eye redness, you should visit your Paradise eye care experts at Joseph Eng, OD to discuss your treatment options.

If you suffer from environmental dry eyes, a visit to your local Paradise eye care offices of Joseph Eng, OD can give you the relief you need.
