Your eye health is incredibly important, and some people may not realize just how important it is to their overall health. Because eye health is so integral, it is vital that people be sure that they receive proper eye care on a regular basis.  Joseph Eng, OD can help monitor your eye health and provide comprehensive Henderson eye care.

There are plenty of benefits involved if you schedule regular eye exams. A routine eye examination will check plenty of things, things that cannot be determined during a routine physical or general exam with your primary care doctor. Here with Joseph Eng, OD your eyes will be in good hands. A regular checkup here with us provides comprehensive Henderson eye care. Your eyes will be screened for any signs of cancer, disease or eye conditions. Often, many eye conditions go unnoticed by patients suffering from them during their earliest stages, especially if they do not visit their eye doctor for regular screenings. Some conditions, like glaucoma, do not yield noticeable symptoms until damage has already occurred, which is also very often vision loss. To prevent this from occurring, we can provide you with regular eye care that can help monitor your health and catch any conditions as early on as possible. Patients who have a family medical history of such diseases or have diabetes should take extra care to check for the onset of symptoms. It is also important that eye allergies are monitored, too. The symptoms of eye allergies and eye irritation can often be confused with those of eye infections. If you experience any sudden onset of symptoms, you should be sure to get Henderson eye care as soon as possible.

If you live in Henderson, eye care is here at your fingertips. The next time you are scheduling routine checkups and exams for you and your family, be sure to include a visit to Joseph Eng, OD here at our offices for comprehensive eye care to look for and treat any eye conditions.

If you’ve been a wearer of eyeglasses for awhile, then you know all about the importance of properly storing, cleaning and otherwise caring for your lenses and frames. Not only are glasses with bent frames and scratched lenses not helping you see as well as they could be, they’re also expensive to replace. If you’ve recently made (or if you’re considering making) the transition from traditional eyeglasses to contact lenses, however, you may not realize that they require even more attention. There are two reasons for this. On the one hand, contact lenses tend to be even more delicate than regular glasses. On the other hand, contact lenses that are dirty and/or damaged, actually pose a risk to the health of your eyes. Because we here at the local Henderson optometrist practice of Joseph Eng, OD, think that education is an integral part of eye health, we’d like to tell you a little more about the “hows” and “whys” of caring for contacts.

Contact Lens Infections Henderson

You might be wondering to yourself just why it is that dirty or damaged contacts pose a health risk, when dirty or damaged glasses do not. The answer lies in the fact that, whereas glasses lenses sit in front of your eyes, contact lenses make direct contact with your corneas. The result, of course, is that any bacteria, dust or rough spots on your contacts will also be making direct contact with the fronts of your eyes, potentially leading to eye infections, irritation and/or painful scratches. This is why we here at the local Henderson optometrist practice of Joseph Eng, OD, put so much emphasis on contact lens maintenance. Every time you get a new pair of contacts, you should take special care to read all the instructions regarding how often they need to be cleaned, what kind of cleaning solution needs to be used, how lenses should be stored, and when they need to be discarded and replaced altogether.

In addition to practicing good cleaning, storage and replacement habits, another way to protect your eyes against contact lens-related problems is to schedule regular eye exams with our local Henderson optometrist, Joseph Eng, OD. Not only will this allow you to keep your prescriptions up-to-date, it will also allow Dr. Eng to identify and address any contact lens-related issues sooner rather than later.

Glaucoma is caused by an excess of internal air pressure inside your eye. It can lead to damaging your optic nerve. If left unaddressed, it can even cause permanent vision loss. Most at risk for glaucoma are people over 40, those with a family history, and anyone with diabetes. Other factors that make you more susceptible to glaucoma are taking Prednisone and other steroids and family heritage that is Irish, Russian, Hispanic, African-American, Japanese, Scandinavian, or Inuit. Symptoms may not be present, but if you notice a loss of peripheral vision, sudden eye pain, headaches, blurry vision, or halos appearing around light, you should call and schedule an immediate appointment with our Henderson eye doctor.

Cataracts refer to a clouding of your eye lens deriving from buildups of protein. Heredity and age tend to be the greatest risk factors, but sometimes it can result from exposure to toxins or certain drugs, or due to a traumatic eye injury. Symptoms include blurry vision, clouded vision, difficulties driving at night, double vision, a sudden change in your corrective lens needs, and progressive nearsightedness where you no longer need reading glasses. Although cataracts progress slowly, you should be examined by our Henderson eye doctor if you experience any of the mentioned signs.

Macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy are usually applicable only to certain people. With macular degeneration, the most common cause of vision loss in people over 60, there is deterioration in the macula, which is in the center of your retina. It generally does not cause complete vision loss but as it advances, it can cause significant challenges to your vision. It cannot be cured, but it can be treated and the progression slowed. Diabetic retinopathy is a complication that can occur in those who have diabetes. It can cause damage to the blood vessels in your eyes. Symptoms usually do not present until the disease becomes severe, but include loss of central vision when driving or reading, difficulty seeing color, and blurred vision. If left untreated, it can cause retinal detachment and even blindness. If you have diabetes- or are at high risk for it- it is essential to be examined yearly by our Henderson eye doctor.
