A cataract is an eye disease in which the lens of the eye, which is supposed to be clear, becomes cloudy and opaque. As the lens becomes cloudier and the condition worsens, vision decreases. A cataract can develop in one eye in both eyes (cataracts). Cataracts can develop from an eye injury, from using certain medications, as a result of another eye disease or from other health problems like diabetes. Cataracts can develop in adults and children. Although cataracts are usually associated with aging, some children can be born with congenital cataracts. Therefore, if your child has vision problems, it may be necessary to test your child for them. If you or your children are having vision problems, we recommend that you be examined by our Paradise optometrist, Joseph Eng, OD. Dr. Eng, OD can do a cataract eye exam during your comprehensive eye exam. He will check for cataracts as well as other possible eye diseases and conditions.

Paradise Cataract Eye Exam

There are a series of different tests to diagnose eye cataracts in both adults and children. Our Paradise optometrist, Joseph Eng, OD will do a thorough exam when you see him. It is recommended that when you get a comprehensive eye exam so you can be checked not only for cataracts but for other possible eye conditions and diseases as well. Many of the tests used to check for cataracts are usually included in a comprehensive eye exam. The tests used to help diagnose cataracts are: visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, a split lamp test, and pupil dilation. A visual acuity test measures how accurate your vision is at different distances. This is a painless and simple test. An eye chart is used. You will be asked to read letters of different sizes off a chart. This is a quick way to test for cataracts but this test is not a standalone test. Further testing must be done to diagnose cataracts. A contrast sensitivity test is similar to the acuity test but is more involved since it looks at how cataracts can decrease image contrast due to light scattering and glare caused by cataracts. A split lamp test involves the use of a split lamp which is a special type of microscope. It magnifies the patient’s eyes so Dr. Eng can examine your eye lenses to determine if cataracts are present and the severity of the cataracts. Pupil dilation is a very common test to check for cataracts. Dr. Eng will be able to get view of the entire eye lens when your pupil is dilated. The doctor can then examine the entire lens to see if a cataract is present.
