Eye diseases are very dangerous and can cause not only vision loss, but total blindness, as well as irreversible damage to your eyes themselves. The most alarming aspect of them is that the common ones have no symptoms to draw your attention to them during their early stages. Only when they have become advanced will you be likely to notice signs, and by then you could have sustained harm that would have been preventable with timely diagnosis. Our North Las Vegas best optometrist, Joseph Eng, OD, recommends a yearly screening at our office for ocular disease evaluations.
The four conditions that are tested for regularly are glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. Unfortunately, none of them are curable, but they can be treated and managed effectively. Our North Las Vegas best optometrist utilizes the most advanced equipment so that diagnoses are highly accurate. Glaucoma is an unsafe level of internal eye pressure caused by a buildup of eye fluid. A baseline test called tonometry gauges your eye pressure, and is helpful in determining the presence of glaucoma as well as the severity. For cataracts, the key test is a slit lamp exam. Cataracts doesn’t represent the same level of threat, though. It’s a buildup of protein deposits on your eye lenses, leading to blurry or cloudy vision. Macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy are not applicable to everyone, but they are serious conditions. Macular degeneration results in loss of central vision, while diabetic retinopathy causes not only vision loss, but possible bleeding of retinal blood vessels.
There are too many symptoms that these four eye diseases comprise to list them all here, but you shouldn’t wait for them to appear anyway. Instead, reach out to our office right now, while you’re thinking of it, and schedule an appointment to be examined for ocular disease by our North Las Vegas best optometrist.
